Children & Young People Counselling

Structure: Fortnightly Thursdays 6-9pm online and one Saturday a month face to face
This post-graduate CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People (aged 11-18) training will be a regulated qualification for this age range on the Ofqual register.
The qualification will offer a recognised qualification specifically designed for qualified counsellors wishing to work with children and young people in the community e.g. schools, colleges and specialist agencies, as well as independent practice.
The course will bring in working experientially with creative arts in an integrative theoretical model.
There will also be a focus on working with Childhood Trauma exploring resources and guest speakers to develop knowledge in this area. The course is run in association with BCTS. We’re currently in the process of gaining CPCAB approval.
In this course you will gain a deeper grounding in: Child development theories whilst working with the creative arts to facilitate your own journey and touchstones from your past that can enhance your on-going training. Our tutors are all integrative in their own training.
Term One: Working Ethically with C & YP / Professional Practice/ Assignment
Term Two: Exploration of Law/ safeguarding focus on C & YP Working within an agency/family/Carers
Term Three: Child Analysis Theories / Professional Practice / Assignment
Term Four: Working experientially- Art therapy / Mind-Body-Link – exploration of difference own CPD
Fortnightly sessions
These will take place online and will be made up of a focus on theories, working ethically and practical case studies, there will also be room for student led presentation on own case work. The main theories included are Winnicott, Bowlby, Erickson, Klien, other theories and further reading may well be introduced by tutors.
These will be explored through group discussion, experiential exercise and Assignments, where we will also look at challenges and differences to adult work.
Saturday session – These will be held in person once a month. they will have an experiential element to them. With the use of creative artwork, (Clay, Paints, Collage, Timelines) to explore and develop own self-awareness, developing personal growth perspective, being able to explore internal integration of different parts of the self – so bringing together split off aspects which are contained in the shadow, working with how this influences own practice with C & YP . It also means exploring patterns from the past, developing own self-awareness. Enhancing empathy in practice and gaining ideas and techniques of how to introduce these techniques into own practice. As well as a link to theories and assignments.
There will also be a focus on further self-development and link to areas of interest at the end of the course.
Additional requirements
To be in supervised client work with C & YP under 18 by end of first term
To commit to undertaking 20 hours of personal therapy
To be a member of a professional body
Assessment
Assessment is carried out via the following means: –
- Monthly reflective journals of up to 1000 words
- One written case-study
- One oral case-study presentation
- Peer-led presentation & reflective essay
- Tutor and Peer observations
- 2 Assignments ( 3,500)
- Client log (40 hours)
- Supervisor Report and Log
Course entry Requirements
- To hold a minimum of a Level 4 diploma in counselling
- To have a minimum of 150 client hours
- To have completed a minimum of 40 hours personal therapy
- To have a supervisor who works in the field of C & YP
- To have worked with or intending to start working with C & YP
- To have the capacity to take responsibility for own safety and capacity to take responsibility for own reactions, experiences and feelings
